Raspberries to Oblivion

Lately, all I've been listening to is Black Breath. Heavy and fast is what I need to get to work on time, and they more than satisfy both requirements. Plus it only takes me about 15 minutes to get to work now, and that's pretty much the exact length of this EP. So convenient!!
Named after a song by Repulsion, Black Breath is from Seattle. If I had to pick a metal genre to classify them under, I'd say they're kind of dirty, black, thrash with a touch of hardcore. My point is, they fucking kill it. I've seen them twice now, and they're even more amazing live. Besides, check out this cover! In addition to that sweet font, this is the type of harvest that will lead us all into oblivion.
I encourage all you brutal bakers out there to check out their full length album Heavy Breathing. It continues what Razor to Oblivion started.

To honor my latest obsession, and the best way to start my day, I give you:
Black Breath: Raspberries to Oblivion

Makes 24 cupcakes

Metal Constituents:
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 stick + 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/8 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 containers ( 6oz each) raspberries; 1 container smashed into oblivion with a fork, 1 container coarsely chopped
For the Frosting:
  • 2 sticks butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
For the Chocolate Scythes:
Merciless Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two 12-cup cupcake pans with baking cups, and set aside.
  2. Whisk together flours, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Stir together milk and vanilla in a small bowl.
  4. Beat butter with a mixer on medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add sugar in a slow, steady stream, and beat until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  6. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
  7. Scrape down sides of bowl, and continue beating until smooth.
  8. Reduce speed to low, and add flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour.
  9. Fold in smashed and chopped raspberries.
  10. Divide batter among baking cups, filling each about three-quarters full.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcakes comes out clean.
  12. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. To make the chocolate scythes: print out a picture of a scythe, and place it on a plate.
  14. Put a piece of wax paper over the picture.
  15. Place both candy writer tubes in a glass of warm (not boiling hot) water for a few minutes.
  16. Knead both tubes to ensure candy is melted inside.
  17. Trace the outline of the scythe on top of the wax paper with the black candy writer, and then fill in the blade with the white candy writer.
  18. Place plate in the fridge to harden candy.
  19. Remove chocolate scythe from the wax paper, and keep in the fridge for at least 10 minutes before using.
  20. To make the frosting: Beat butter, raspberries, vanilla, and salt at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy.
  21. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating at low speed until blended and smooth after each addition.
  22. Pipe onto completely cooled cupcakes.
  23. Decorate each cake with 1 chocolate scythe.
  24. Eat these in an attempt to stop entropic decay.

Here is some footage of Black Breath playing Razor to Oblivion. Enjoy!

Also, I really wanted to make Black Breath: Eat the Chip Witch, but those will have to wait for my next blog -Metal Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Black Breath kicks ass live! The last time they were in town, they opened for the godfathers of Swedish Death Metal, Entombed! Killer!

Raspberries to Oblivion just sounds so funny in a way, can't imagine the faces of the family when I tell them this is really what the cupcakes are called, lol.
And thanks for the video to watch, have never heard of these guys, not too bad.

Thanks for the heads-up on Black Breath--even if I never get around to baking these, I'll at least think of them throughout a summer of eating raspberries....
